IoT services are among the main reasons for connecting devices to the Internet. At their most basic level, these services fall into four core categories: connectivity; device monitoring and control; data collection and storage; and data analytics. In various combinations, these functions produce IoT services that enable: businesses, municipalities, and consumers to reduce costs and maximize utilization of their devices; dealers to provide predictive maintenance and improve customer service; and OEMs to understand usage patterns to develop new features and refine product designs. VDC has observed a slow but steady move away from low-level and/or specialized languages, such as assembly and Ada, across the entire embedded landscape. Some verticals, such as consumer electronics and retail automation, are migrating faster than others are, but the last bastions of safety-critical software are no longer safe from the upward consolidation. Visit the Is it the End of the Ada Era? page to learn more.

When connectivity and smart functionality added to a product reduce its lifespan compared to a similar non-connected, non-smart product, that's the Internet of Prematurely Obsolescent Things. Premature obsolescence is not the same as planned obsolescence (when products are designed with the deliberate intent of shortening or limiting their lifespans). Premature obsolescence is usually an inadvertent side effect of technological progress, but product makers can take steps to reduce its impact. Visit the Internet of Prematurely Obsolescent Things page to learn more.

The continued proliferation of embedded processors featuring third-party core IP combined with growing design and competitive pressures is forcing vendors to expand their support of different architectures. Supporting multiple core architectures or migrating to new ones is no easy undertaking for suppliers; they must align product roadmaps, software development tooling and resources, engineering talent, training, and more. However, this level of support is necessary when adapting to the evolving architectural landscape as prompted by the heterogeneous needs of engineering organizations across industries. Visit the IoT Forcing Architectural Change  page to learn more.

System resource restrictions around memory and processing power were one of the fundamental issues that first fueled the development of the embedded operating system ecosystem. Overtime, however, the relative importance of these issues diminished in favor of more robust offerings capable of enabling sophisticated user interfaces and more advanced device connectivity. Now, however, the IoT has catalyzed a new level of market demand for OSs that can operate on MCU-class devices. Visit the Battle of the IoT is Being Fought in the MCU Software Ecosystem page to learn more.

The addition of connectivity greatly increases security risks to embedded devices. OEM engineers should harden a device’s virtual perimeter to reduce the chance of security breaches. However, engineers should consider that the device may be successfully breached and thus security-harden as many internal hardware and software elements as is practical. This VDC View will explore these issues and more. Visit the Secure Hardening of Embedded Devices page to learn more.

Architecting systems and developing solutions for the Internet of Things will require specific technical and business knowledge that schools and companies are beginning to address through a number of programs and ventures. The organizations that are successful in setting up the future leaders of the IoT will be top of mind in important purchasing decisions, and will be more likely to achieve a healthy return on investment down the road. Talented students will flow into technology management and leadership roles due to the quality and availability of relevant coursework and educational options. Visit the State of the IoT Education page to learn more.

Pre-analytics at the local level can dramatically reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent to the cloud. Local analytics can have faster response times and improved reliability compared to cloud-based analytics, which are especially important factors in time-critical or safety-critical applications. Local systems may not be optimized to find big data relationships, but local systems can be set up to utilize such relationships effectively once they are uncovered by cloud-based big data analytics.Visit the Retro-Analytics for IoT page to learn more.

The landscape of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions is changing rapidly. As quickly as the value of PaaS solutions was placed on the consumerization and user experiences of development platform offerings, premiums have now been placed on the ease of back-end integrations. However, the value associated with time to market in the Internet of Things marketplace is too high. Visit the Diverse Ecosystems Required to Create Platform for PaaS Success in IoT page to learn more.

The IoT is helping manufacturers extend relationships with their customers, moving beyond a one-time purchase business model to pursue new and lucrative service engagements. The pace needed to compete in the IoT should now serve as the impetus for the consideration of third-party resources to help develop and support the connected management of IoT applications.
