Scandit – Customer Insights and VDC’s Outlook for the Company’s Future (Blog Part 2)

by Richa Gupta | 02/09/2015

VDC recently authored and published a white paper (download here) focused on Scandit, an independent software vendor with a keen focus on enabling enterprise-grade barcode scanning using the built-in camera on smart devices. In my first blog on the topic, I talked about the evolving data capture solutions market and how the AIDC industry is expanding its footprint to now proactively leverage the capabilities of powerful consumer devices by introducing solutions that enable enterprise-grade performance on smartphones and tablets. Scandit, and other solution providers like it, are changing the way the world views barcode scanning and devices that enable the same.

In this blog, I would like to focus my attention on Scandit’s involvement in this rapidly evolving market and VDC’s outlook for the company’s future. Scandit-powered mobile applications are today supporting use cases with 100-500 scans per device per day. Decode speeds, processing times, performance in highly variable light conditions, and motion tolerance may vary from purpose-built engines, however, features like omnidirectional data and image capture, high density barcode scanning, and blurry/damaged barcode decoding are all made available to Scandit’s user base. VDC’s primary research indicates that Scandit has been part of a few large deployments in which purpose-built data capture solutions have been replaced with mobile devices running applications either developed entirely by Scandit or those that leverage its Barcode Scanner SDK.

SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) in its internal mail department, for instance, chose to completely replace its 5-year old legacy data capture devices (MC70/75 by the former Motorola Solutions) with Samsung S4 and S5 Mini Android devices running Scandit’s fully customizable and configurable end-to-end track-and-trace solution. This application enables SBB to generate scan-related statistics and advanced scan information (like scan location) beyond barcode data capture. Companies like Cardinal Health, Coop Switzerland, Interline Brands, and Imperial Supplies, on the other hand, each exclusively leveraged Scandit’s Barcode Scanner SDK to ease the data capture process for application downloaders and users (the list includes employees, partners and customers). Insights from all of these customers showcases the broad range of capabilities that Scandit brings to the data capture market and highlights the company’s ability to support applications like track-and-trace, damaged goods documentation, inventory management and control, and customer self-scanning.

From VDC’s perspective, Scandit’s greatest strength is its platform-agnostic approach to workflow template creation and solution development. Its ability to leverage the built-in camera in any device (consumer-grade or rugged) and turn it into a relevant enterprise-ready barcode scanning solution will make it attractive to end users and application developers alike. Given the proliferation of consumer devices for business use, Scandit sees its most significant business development opportunities opening up in addressing the needs of the mobile workforce in field sales/service, logistics, and retail. As Scandit continues to innovate in order to enable seamless integration with existing ERP/WMS systems and e-commerce portals, it has the distinct opportunity to capture share and establish a strong foothold in the evolving mobile scanning market by creating lightweight applications around inventory management, purchasing, and product information lookup. VDC believes solution vendors like Scandit are positioning themselves to proactively capitalize on connected intelligence-related trends and advancements, mobilizing and further empowering today’s workforce and everyday consumers, all at the same time.
