Document Title: MOBILITY AS A SERVICE: IS THE TIME RIGHT?

Document Title: GLOBAL ECONOMY TAKES THE ECONOMY OUT OF SCALE
Publication Date:March 2009
Excerpt:As the recession persists, and demand for so many categories of goods continues to fall, one of the most powerful cost management tools available to manufacturers disappears: economy of scale. With falling demand comes smaller order values, lower material requirements and limits to volume-based price negotiations. One can only get so much blood out of a stone; or a supplier of stones, and so many other commodities. Yet customers are forcing suppliers to find ways to lower COGS at the same time that volume pricing power is limited, or vanished, or worse – undifferentiated. When margin basements are achieved, or fast approaching, then operations executives inside manufacturing enterprises of all shapes and sizes are confronted with varying degrees of one common new reality: If the operation is not agile, one is likely to be looking for a job soon. Factory and plant operators are finding ways to take significant costs out of their operations despite having limited or no room to renegotiate lower material costs and lower volume commitments. One of the most powerful tools they are discovering is a new level of connectivity on the factory floor.
