STRATEGIC INSIGHTS 2012: EMBEDDED SOFTWARE & TOOLS MARKET
OPPORTUNITIES & FORECASTS THROUGH 2014

Research Summary:

The market highlights from our ongoing coverage of the Embedded Software & Tools market include: The rising competition from open source platforms such as Android has created additional mainstream alternatives to commercial operating systems, with these alternate solutions available from all sides of the embedded industry; All industries cite outsourcing various tasks (e.g. software application development, middleware development, test) as part of their current project development; As the smartphone OS battle continues to intensify, independent device manufacturers such as HTC, LG, and Samsung have avoided committing their entire mobile roadmap to a single platform, instead opting for dual strategies centered around Android and Windows Phone 7; Mobile & Embedded Virtualization (MEV) has emerged as an alternative to address time-to-market pressures and cost-reduction requirements, in the face of mounting complexity now associated with many new embedded systems. VDC’s Strategic Insights 2012: Embedded Software & Tools Market research program will continue to analyze these (and other) emerging trends as well as provide data and insights that will help you to identify, define, prioritize and attack the best market opportunities.

Event Name: A Look Ahead: Android, Security & MoreListen Now!
Overview:The Internet of Things phenomenon has enabled seemingly countless innovations, from the connected car to handheld point-of-sale devices and wearable military communication systems. These intelligent, connected devices are also storing and communicating large quantities of data in the process. But all this connectivity has put consumers, enterprises, and OEMs at considerable risk, because in most cases these devices are not adequately protected. During this QuickCast, VDC's Jared Weiner discusses Android, Security and Cross-Domain Integration.

Event Name: Software Developers Using Agile-ish Methods Listen Now!
Overview:Development in accordance to all the principles of the methodology, or “full Agile” has a limited applicability. There is little benefit to replacing one rigid development orthodoxy, such as the V-model, with another such, as “full-Agile.” What we are seeing instead is that many vendors are applying selected aspects of the Agile methodology. Combining this along with elements from other methods, in a hybrid approach helps to maintain the needed flexibility. In fact, this hybrid approach to iterative development, which we’ve christened “Agile-ish”, is far more common than using a “full-Agile” approach. VDC believes this “Agile-ish” approach represents the future of Agile development in both the embedded and enterprise markets.

Event Name: Security & The Internet of ThingsListen Now!
Overview:Security is a topic that has very much been top-of-mind for many in the embedded industry. When you think about the Internet of Things – the growing number of connected devices out there and the types of data to which they have access – the potential risks can be quite frightening. The reality is that more OEMs and enterprises are putting themselves at risk every day. During this QuickCast, Jared Weiner discusses device security.

Event Name: A Tough Business - Highly Fragmented & Under PressureListen Now!
Overview:OEMs face increasing levels of complexity from integrating new silicon to the development and integration of software code from various sources. In addition to standalone tool suppliers, competitive market dynamics has created choice in the source and selection of tools that can be acquired as part of a commercial OS platform, available through the open source community, or available through hardware suppliers. For standalone tool suppliers, the market challenge is further complicated by the anticipated decrease in use of in-house developed target OSes, where the use of these tools represents an important source of income for suppliers. During this QuickCast, VDC's Steve Balacco lays out some of the challenges and concerns for the software development tools market.

Event Name: Pressure Pushing Software Testing MainstreamListen Now!
Overview:In the past, VDC has advised suppliers of automated test and verification tools to primarily target end users at the engineer level. However, market pressures on software development organizations are driving the use of more sophisticated lifecycle management tools that can have greater impact on development processes. A nascent shift in test tool procurement decisions is underway from this consideration. During this QuickCast, VDC’s André Girard discusses this emerging trend and some of the leading factors VDC believes are influencing the automated test tool market in 2012.

Document Title: Parallel Views: Agile Developers & Cross-Domain Integrators
Publication Date:Jun, 2012
Excerpt:Android has been making headlines in the mobile space for several years now, continuing to gain momentum since shortly after its debut in late 2008 on the HTC Dream smartphone. In February 2012, Google’s Andy Rubin reported that activations of Android had reached 850,000 per day – an indication of the platform’s remarkably steep growth trajectory. However, many barriers – such as growing security concerns – still remain.

Document Title: Parallel Views: Agile Developers & Cross-Domain Integrators
Publication Date:Dec, 2011
Excerpt:Some of the leading trends positioned to impact the embedded software and tools market in 2012, include: the continued growth of the embedded/real-time OS market, how Android is recasting the embedded Linux landscape, the security considerations threatening incumbent development solution sets and how connectivity is redefining development requirements and service models. One of the other trends getting considerable attention in recent months has been the continued expansion of connectivity requirements across a number of different embedded device classes and the affect this will have on the business/service models in the embedded community.

Document Title: Standalone Tools Suppliers Challenged by Expected Decrease in Use of In-House Developed OSes
Publication Date:May, 2012
Excerpt:New findings from VDC Research Group indicate that the market for commercial operating systems continues to present excellent opportunities to OS vendors, with an incredible 2.5 billion more devices likely to use a commercial OS in 2014 than in 2010. Our research indicates growth in the commercial operating systems market will be driven by two key trends. The first is the rapid increase in the number of devices with technology embedded in them, fueled by M2M, the Internet of Things and the pervasive Internet, among others. We estimate that 7 billion embedded devices shipped in 2010, with nearly 13 billion devices expected to ship in 2014.
