| Event Name: | Software Developers Using Agile-ish Methods | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | Development in accordance to all the principles of the methodology, or “full Agile” has a limited applicability. There is little benefit to replacing one rigid development orthodoxy, such as the V-model, with another such, as “full-Agile.” What we are seeing instead is that many vendors are applying selected aspects of the Agile methodology. Combining this along with elements from other methods, in a hybrid approach helps to maintain the needed flexibility. In fact, this hybrid approach to iterative development, which we’ve christened “Agile-ish”, is far more common than using a “full-Agile” approach. VDC believes this “Agile-ish” approach represents the future of Agile development in both the embedded and enterprise markets. |

| Event Name: | A Tough Business - Highly Fragmented & Under Pressure | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | OEMs face increasing levels of complexity from integrating new silicon to the development and integration of software code from various sources. In addition to standalone tool suppliers, competitive market dynamics has created choice in the source and selection of tools that can be acquired as part of a commercial OS platform, available through the open source community, or available through hardware suppliers. For standalone tool suppliers, the market challenge is further complicated by the anticipated decrease in use of in-house developed target OSes, where the use of these tools represents an important source of income for suppliers. During this QuickCast, VDC's Steve Balacco lays out some of the challenges and concerns for the software development tools market. |

| Event Name: | Staying Competitive Requires Managing Change | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | If you’ve listened to other VDC QuickCasts or keep up on our blog, you have probably heard us talk about the seemingly endless increase in software code size and complexity. Software is accounting for an ever greater portion of system value and its development is consuming more and more of organizations’ time and budget. Companies are facing a crisis of complexity as the growth in software volume and complexity outpaces increases in their development budgets. During today’s QuickCast, VDC’s Andre Girard discusses some of the factors software developers face today and how they influence a few key trends in the software and systems lifecycle management market. |

| Event Name: | Pressure Pushing Software Testing Mainstream | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | In the past, VDC has advised suppliers of automated test and verification tools to primarily target end users at the engineer level. However, market pressures on software development organizations are driving the use of more sophisticated lifecycle management tools that can have greater impact on development processes. A nascent shift in test tool procurement decisions is underway from this consideration. During this QuickCast, VDC’s André Girard discusses this emerging trend and some of the leading factors VDC believes are influencing the automated test tool market in 2012. |

| Event Name: | Android in Embedded: The Future is Now? | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | Android has been a force in the mobile space since shortly after its debut in late 2008 on the HTC Dream smartphone. Between the beginning of 2010 and February 2012, daily activations of Android grew from 60,000 to 850,000 – a remarkably steep growth trajectory. What is truly remarkable, however, is that these rates do not even tell the full story of Android's growth. Google's figures take into account only those devices that have been connected via mobile networks, meaning that officially reported activations do not include devices such as WiFi-only tablets, eReaders, or the millions of other Android-based products that have already been deployed in a number of different areas. In this QuickCast, VDC’s Jared Weiner discusses why Android is getting so much attention and some of the challenges associated with adoption. |

| Overview: | Over the years, VDC has observed that suppliers of commercial OSs almost always cite roll-your-own OSs and OEM internal engineering organizations as their primary competition. OEMs face increasing levels of complexity from integrating new silicon architectures to the development and integration of in-house developed code, commercially available software components and open source software. During this QuickCast, VDC's Steve Balacco gives an update on the embedded operating system market, including key competitors, estimates and forecasts. |

| Event Name: | Changing Cultures & Crossing Domains with Lifecycle Management | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | Though fewer engineers are falling behind schedule on projects, you shouldn't get too excited yet. A third of respondents in a survey we conducted still reported being behind schedule, making it clear that there are still some significant problems left to solve. The most cited reason was lack of manpower. This challenge, while certainly not new, has been exacerbated over recent years due to the unrelenting growth in complexity of today's systems. During this QuickCast, VDC's Chris Rommel discusses this trend and how, in an attempt to inject new engineering efficiencies and synergies into the development cycle, a number of OEMs have been turning to software and system lifecycle management solutions. |

| Event Name: | 2011 Retrospective & 2012 Expectations for the Embedded Software & Tools Market | Listen Now! |
| Overview: | Although market growth is ratcheting back in some cases following a burst of catch-up, post-recessionary spending, VDC believes that the unrelenting evolution of embedded devices will continue to present opportunities to market vendors through 2012 and beyond. As OEMs are driven to include more sophisticated feature sets and functionality in even tighter time to market windows, they are evaluating an increasingly broad set of Runtime and development solutions. As a result, it will become more critical for OS vendors to strengthen their overall product and service portfolio to maximize their revenue opportunities and navigate the challenges wrought by OEMs' growing interest in open source technologies. During this QuickCast, VDC's Chris Rommel discusses the leading trends that VDC believes will impact the market in 2012 and takes a look back at one of the key cogs within the embedded software industry: the embedded and real-time operating system market. |
