Event Name: NFC Still Searching for Traction - Here's WhyListen Now!
Overview:The NFC story presented by the general and business media is, in our opinion, decidedly rosy compared to actual reality. In a sense, the frequent coverage devoted to NFC is a good thing - recall the adage, "any publicity is good publicity." However, this saying must be taken with a grain (or two) of salt in the context of technology markets, because excessive publicity can lead to hype...and hype may in turn lead to unfulfilled expectations. During this QuickCast, John Shuster discusses some of the key factors limiting NFC adoption and strategies ecosystem stakeholders can use to drive adoption.

Event Name: Great Expectations, but Are They Realistic? NFC in 2012Listen Now!
Overview:Late 2011 and the early part of 2012 brought a lot of hype and exaggerated expectations to the NFC ecosystem, some of which we identified and discussed in a previous QuickCast. With our launch of the 2012 Voice of the Customer NFC series coming soon, we thought it would be useful to provide a retrospective analysis of what’s happened so far in 2012 and reset expectations in regards to the second half of this year and beyond. During this QuickCast, John Shuster reviews some of the major trends impacting the NFC ecosystem so far this year, focusing in on smart marketing and mobile wallets and giving some forecasts and expectations for the rest of 2012.

Document Title: NFC and the Competition: Who’s Winning the m.Payment Battle…and Why?
Publication Date:Jan, 2007
Excerpt:Despite potential to serve a broad range of applications ranging from mobile payment (m.payment) to device pairing, NFC (Near Field Communication) is still challenged to gain broader adoption across all regional markets. While pockets of intense NFC activity certainly exist, particularly in EMEA (France) and APAC (Japan, and to a lesser extent, Singapore), the technology has yet to fulfill its billing as “the next big thing.” That’s particularly true for m.payment. Because of strong competition from alternative mobile technologies vying for the same opportunity, NFC faces challenges convincing merchants and consumers that it is the best way to enable m.payment (see Table 1). So, VDC remains cautious in its NFC outlook, especially for m.payment applications. While we are bullish on the concept of mobile payment, we are not convinced that NFC is – or will be – the best way to enable this application. It certainly will not be the only way.

Document Title: VDC Envisions Card Issuers as Likely Winners in m.Wallet Wars. Here’s Why.
Publication Date:May, 2012
Excerpt:NFC continues to receive much attention as an enabling technology for a host of B2C applications. Enterprises evaluating NFC are often drawn to the technology by the prospects of monetizing the various applications it enables, with mobile wallets (m.wallets) being among the most obvious choices for generating new revenue streams. As a result, m.wallet initiatives have been the focal point of much investment and media coverage during the past year. This trend has shown no sign of abating in 2012 and seems to be gathering further momentum as major players like Visa and MasterCard have announced plans to get involved with mobile wallets. Even some Tier-1 retailers, including Target and Walmart, have publicly disclosed that they are evaluating store-branded m.wallet applications. With multiple offerings and application concepts materializing, it is clear the m.wallet war is underway and key influencers are starting to battle for position.
