We are in the early days of a mobile computing cycle that was ushered in with the advent of touchscreen smartphones, which not only feature powerful computing capabilities and intuitive user interfaces, but most importantly have a burgeoning apps ecosystem. While the term "consumerization of IT" is regularly utilized to describe the device proliferation that is occurring in business settings, 2011 was the coming out party for the BYOD (bring your own device) acronym. BYOD has not only extended the virtual boundaries of the enterprise, but it has blurred the lines between "home" and "office" and has opened up new opportunities for customer-facing activities. Even though this mobile computing cycle is just getting started, the associated mobile software market will be forced to grow up very quickly in 2012 and may experience some growing pains along the way. Determining the scenarios for these engagements and developing software to streamline the associated workflows will continue to be a key to success for many participants in the mobile ecosystem.
