A Call to Revisit Windows Embedded
Microsoft’s most recent addition to its IoT portfolio is IoT Central, which will be compelling offering for the SMB OEM sector due to Microsoft’s strong partner network. This offering sits at the top of Microsoft’s IoT stack, essentially bundling its Azure IoT services into an easily-digestible dashboard and app management SaaS offering for OEM business admins and app developers.
In order to make this new offering successful at the top of the stack, Microsoft should consider strengthening its fundamental Windows Embedded operating system (OS) technologies and/or adding an MCU-focused OS to its Windows portfolio. Currently, developer uncertainty around the legacy Windows OS platform is harming the company’s entire IoT ecosystem.
